Srinagar, Jan 18 (KNO): Zubair Ahmed Lone, a resident of Qazipora Tangmarg, brought pride to India by winning the silver medal at the Federation International Skiing (FIS) Alpine Snowboarding Championships in Serbia, competing against athletes from several countries. Speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Zubair, who has represented India in prestigious events like European Cups, NorAm Cups and FIS races, competing in countries like the United States, Canada, and others said, that despite his successes, his journey has been far from easy. “It has been very challenging, and I have faced a lot of criticism.” Snowboarding since 2007, he said, initially he was not happy with his results, as he often finishes between 20th and 40th positions. “Now, securing second place is such an amazing feeling. I have been waiting for this for a very long time, he said, adding that he was expecting better, but unfortunately, he could not. “Still, I’m happy with this result and determined to do even better in the future,” he said. With the recent success boosting his confidence, Lone said that he prepares for upcoming competitions. “My immediate focus is on qualifying for the World Cup races and World Championships in March, aiming to secure the required 50 points to compete, as he has already earned 40 points.” Reflecting on his journey, Lone credited his success to perseverance. “As they say, hard work pays off — it really did,” he said. “I’m looking forward to more opportunities in February and beyond. This silver medal is just the beginning.” Training in the U.S. for the past few years, Zubair has a decorated career possessing several gold, silver and bronze medals at national competitions, including gold in the second edition of Khelo India. Pertinently, the event saw participation from India, the Czech Republic, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece and Romania, with the gold medal going to an athlete from the Czech Republic and the bronze to a competitor from Serbia—(KNO)
